In a recent educational webinar hosted by World Extreme Medicine, Lieutenant Colonel Professor Steven Jeffery delivered an expert-led discussion on wound pain, tissue injury, and practical approaches to wound management across both conventional and austere clinical environments.
Drawing on extensive civilian, military, and humanitarian experience, Professor Jeffery outlined how open wounds can generate significant acute and procedural pain that is often underestimated in routine care, particularly during cleaning, handling, and closure. The webinar explored limitations of conventional approaches that rely primarily on systemic analgesia or delayed pain control, and examined the clinical rationale for topical, locally acting interventions applied directly to the wound to improve patient comfort while supporting infection control and an optimal wound environment.
The discussion also considered how translational insights from veterinary medicine have informed thinking in human wound care, particularly in situations involving trauma, field medicine, or limited resources. Within this broader educational context, Medi-Solfen® is referenced at approximately the 21-minute mark as an example of a topical wound pain management approach under development for human use. The webinar is presented for educational purposes and reflects the independent views and clinical experience of the speaker.
